July is Disability Pride Month. A month to celebrate identity, community, and the unapologetic pride of people with disabilities. Here in the UAE, we don’t call them “disabled” we proudly call them People of Determination. A name that reflects strength, dignity, resilience, and the unwavering belief that everyone has the right to thrive. And Dubai is more than just a city of ambition it’s a city that’s already showing the world what true inclusion looks like. From accessible public spaces to barrier-free metro systems, from leading policies to initiatives that empower People of Determination to participate fully in work, education, and society, Dubai is setting an example on a global stage. But Disability Pride Month also asks us all to pause and reflect: - Are we continuing to design spaces, workplaces, and communities that are not just accessible but welcoming, empowering, and truly inclusive? - Are we amplifying the voices of People of Determination not out of charity, but because their presence, leadership, and contributions make our society richer, smarter, and stronger? Let’s talk about the hidden tax of “mandatory fun” in the workplace, especially for neurodivergent employees. Research shows: - Neurodivergent individuals (Autistic, ADHD, sensory processing differences, anxiety, etc.) experience significantly higher cognitive fatigue after unstructured social events. - Sensory overload from noisy restaurants, crowded meeting rooms, or loud office celebrations can impair executive functioning for hours or even days. - The pressure to mask, socialize, or perform “small talk” activates the same stress responses linked to burnout, withdrawal, and job dissatisfaction. So what happens after that ‘team bonding’ lunch? A neurodivergent employee may spend the rest of the day struggling to focus, recovering from overwhelm, or silently masking while their cognitive resources are depleted. What happens after that ‘surprise’ birthday celebration in the office? The same thing or worse. Some may opt to skip the next meeting. Some will push through quietly. Others? They’re already thinking about quitting. Let’s be very clear: Inclusion isn’t free cake in the breakroom. Inclusion is the freedom to say “No, thank you” without judgment, penalty, or raised eyebrows. Here’s the truth no one wants to admit: If your “culture” drains people, it’s not culture. It’s exclusion wrapped in good intentions.
